St. Vincent’s Health Partners Selected as Assister Organization for Access Health CT
St. Vincent’s Health Partners has been selected by Access Health CT as an Assister Organization. Christina Cano, RN, BSN and newest member to the SVHP team, will participate in the training and certification process for the Assister program. The Assister program is a federally-funded grant program established through the Affordable Care Act (ACA). The Navigator and Assister Outreach Program is the result of a unique partnership between Access Health CT and the State of Connecticut’s Office of the Healthcare Advocate (OHA). The program will play a key role in Access Health CT’s community outreach efforts and brings the ACA directly to the people. Navigators and Assisters will provide consumers with support enrolling in a variety of health insurance coverage options including subsidized health insurance, Medicaid and HUSKY programs.
Christina will work with the PHO members and health care settings, to engage, educate and facilitate enrollment through providing one-on-one support during the initial Open Enrollment period of October 1, 2013-March 31, 2014. The program will help individuals and families make educated decisions about their healthcare coverage and refer them to the right place if they have questions or concerns.
In order to receive the Assister certification, candidates must undergo background checks, 34 hours of training and pass a certification exam with a minimum score of 80 percent. Upon certification, Assister’s organizations will receive a grant award of $6,000 to support their community outreach initiatives.

Organizations were selected based on several key criteria including geographic focus, population demographics, cultural connections to the community it serves and language capabilities.
Kate Gervais, Manager of the Navigator and Assister Outreach Program, said the goal is “to have community-based organizations with existing relationships help the uninsured and underinsured members of their communities with these very personal decisions about their health coverage.”
Victoria Veltri, the state’s Healthcare Advocate, is proud to share that the Assister candidates speak over 32 distinct languages. Veltrisaid the Assisters will be able to “provide culturally and linguistically appropriate support to the uninsured members of our community.”
“Assisters provide the education and guidance our residents deserve to help them make the right health plan choices,” said Access Health CT CEO, Kevin Counihan. “We are impressed and delighted with the enthusiasm and commitment of the Assisters to make affordable health insurance a reality in Connecticut.”
“We are so pleased and proud to have been selected to participate in the Assister program,” said Dr. Thomas Raskauskas, CEO. “Our deep-rooted relationships in the community will help us reach those uninsured and underinsured individuals who need access to insurance but don’t know where to start.
